India has reached a major milestone in defense self-reliance with the successful test-firing of the first 100% indigenously produced AK-203 Sher rifle. Conducted at the Korwa Ordnance Factory in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, the initial trials included burst-firing tests that yielded highly encouraging results.
Manufactured by Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL)—a joint venture established in 2019—the prototype was constructed entirely from domestic components and raw materials sourced from Indian industry. While earlier batches relied on imported Russian knock-down kits, this achievement demonstrates full end-to-end localization.

Following successful preliminary testing, IRRPL is preparing to hand over 100% indigenized prototypes to the Indian Army for formal trials in September 2026. Under the current agreement, over 600,000 rifles will be supplied to the Indian Armed Forces, with full delivery expected to complete ahead of schedule by December 2030.
